SAILING LESSONS

**Lessons re-open to the public July 4th

Dinghy Lessons

A great way to learn the basic skill of sailing.  Dinghies are small boats usually crewed by one or two people.  You'll learn the basic theory as well as getting some on the water practice.  The dinghy lessons are done in two levels with each level broken down into 4 units.

Basic Dinghy (4 units*)

In the first unit you'll start off learning the theory behind sailing and become familiar with the different parts of the boats.  After, we'll teach you how to set up and and sail within the safety of the marina under close supervision.  You'll also learn how to upright the boat if you capsize.  The first unit takes approximately 3 hours.  The next three units you'll have time to practice until you are comfortable manuevering within the marina.  Each practice unit will take approximately 3 hours.  Each practice session, there will be a coach(es) to assist you.  Once you have finished all four units, you'll earn the Basic Dinghy stamp in your BESA Log Book.  You can do up to two units per day.

Dinghy Master (4 units*)

In Dinghy Master, you will finally get to leave the marina which is much more interesting but more challenging than sailing within the safety of the marina.  You'll learn to handle waves and currents, and most likely practice how to upright your boat after a capsize.   You'll only leave the marina if both you and the instructor feel confident about your ability.  Each unit will take approximately 3 hours and you can take upto unit per day.  Once you have finished all 4 units you'll earn another stamp for your BESA Log Book.   Members who finish Dinghy Master will now be allowed to take out dinghies on their own (with a buddy).  Non-members will be able to charter boats from BESA.

*The number of units to finish any level may vary.  Students may move up faster if they have had previous experience, or may need additional classes at a given level if they are having difficulties.

Keel Boat

In this class you will learn how to opporate the larger boats with both a Mainsail (back sail) and a Jib or Genoa (front sail).  While the boat has some gear that is different from the smaller dingies, many of the principles are the same.

We will start out with about an hour of classroom instruction.  Then we head onto the boat where we will learn everything from launching the boats, raising sails, trimming (adjusting sails), driving the boat and bringing the boat back into the marina.

You will train on a Catalina 22.  The classes can be done in two half days or one full day.  Private or private group instruction is also available.

All courses:  150,000 Won (per person), Max. 4 students.

Private or Group:  400,000 Won (per group), Max. 4 students.
