As most of you know by now, BESA has closed its doors to new members and is also not offering lessons to the general public.I’ve written a plan for the remainder of the year that I think will allow us to stay accessible as well as ensuring quality. This plan will go into effect July 1st.
Types of Memberships
1.Full Club Members
These members pay an annual fee and are allowed all the usual benefits of membership with the addition of being allowed to reserve Ambitious (the club keelboat) and any future club keelboats for private use.
The current annual fee for full membership is 800,000 won. This will remain the same for any current full member who renews their membership.
New members will pay the new fee of 900,000 won as well as a 300,000 won buy-in.New members who wish to upgrade from another membership type will pay a 300,000 won upgrade fee, plus an additional 100,000 won buy-in.If there is less than 4 months remaining in their current membership, the upgrade fee will be 150,000 won.
2.Dinghy Club Members
These members pay an annual fee and are allowed the usual benefits of club membership.Annual dues as well as buy-in will not change for the rest of the year.
3.Monthly Dinghy Members
These members pay a monthly fee and are allowed the usual benefits of club membership. Before, there were two types of monthly members, one for keelboats and one for dinghy. However, there will no longer be a monthly keelboat membership.Dinghy membership fees and buy-in will not change for the rest of the year.
Monthly members who do not pay their monthly fee by due date will be put on the inactive list. They may re-activate their membership at anytime by paying their monthly due so long as there is space available. If the number of monthly membership is maxed out, those wishing to reactivate their membership must wait until a spot opens. These inactive members will have first priority before any others who wish to become members.
4.Out-of-Town Members
Out-of-Town members pay 70% of the annual fee and buy-ins of either dinghy or full memberships. To be eligible for an Out-of-Town membership, you must live at least 50 Km. from the Busan city limits.Previously we had an Out-of-Town pay as you go program, but that program will no longer be offerered.
Member Limits
The maximum number of members will be set for the remainder of the year. These limits will take effect once the club acquires the Laser Picos that have already been ordered.Currently, we expect to get the new boat on or around July 23rd. This maximum number may change if the club acquires more boats. New members will only be allowed to enter if or when a spot is available. The availability of the different memberships will be posted on the website.
Annual Memberships
Full Club Members – 12
Dinghy Club Members – 18
Monthly Memberships
Members – 12
Other Changes
1.Lessons will no longer be free to members.New members will get 50% off the normal lesson price.Current members will be allowed to take free lessons until the end of July 2009.
2.We will offer a co-op damage insurance program. Each member will pay into the co-op for the amount of 100,000 won.Full members will pay 200,000 won. This amount will be paid only once. Those non-members taking lessons will pay 10,000 won per lesson which will give them the same coverage for the day of the lesson. For current members, this will be optional until they re-new, at which point it will be mandatory.
As a member of the co-op, you will be covered for up to 1,000,000 won damage to any boats or property while in charge of a club boat. This co-op damage insurance does not cover injuries.Any member who uses the limit will be required to pay an additional 100,000 to re-enter the co-op.
Club Gear
We have shirts and hats available. The price is 30,000 won for a polo shirt, and 20,000 won for a hat. These items help support the club, so make sure you get one.Pictures will be posted on the website.
Time for another BBQ. This time it's for members only. Sounds pretty exclusive right? Anyway, the Minister of BBQ, Tom, and I will bring the meat. Members can bring some kind of salad or side dish. Don't bring corn, unless it's on the cob. I got two HUGE cans of corn we haven't touched yet. Also, bring a few won to donate to the drink fund. I'll pick up some (more like a lot) beer and wine. If you would like to request something else, feel free. If you can't or don't want to bring anything, no worries. Just pitch in a little more on the donation side.
Before the BBQ, for those who want to, we'll go out sailing. We'll take out ambitious of course, and I'll try to arrange another boat. For those who want to do dinghies, your more than welcome to take them out as well. Hope to see you all at the BBQ!
I'll make a facebook event so you can post what you want to bring or what kind of boat you want to ride on.
Final call for gear. I'll be placing an order this Wednesday night. If you need some gear, please make sure you send me your order no later than Wednesday afternoon.
Also, make sure you check the availability with Rod by emailing him at:
I would definately recommend getting at the very least some gloves. I would suggest:
DG7040B Douglas Gill Regatta Deckhand Short Gloves - Black / Grey
At $20.50, it's a real bargin. These are the same glove I use.
I would also highly recommend everyone get a smock. They're very comfortable and a good one keeps out most of the water even in a capsize. Gill has some good ones that aren't too expensive.
Another item you might want to look at are wetshoes. You can get them here, but the good ones are very expensive and the rest are not so good. There are a lot of rusty sharp object around the marina so wetshoes with a thick sole might help you from unwanted pain later.
For those off you who want to do some really serious sailing, a good pair of battened hiking shorts are always nice. I plan on getting these two:
GULGM0317M Gul 2.5mm 3/4 Length Hikepants - Mercury / Black $130.00
GULGM0056B Gul Short Kinetic Hike Pants - Black / Navy $60.00
I'll be leaving for Seoul next Monday. I've be asked to help organize the Korea's Cup which is part of the World Match Racing Tour. You can find our more about the race at: http://www.worldmatchracingtour.com
I will be there until mid-June. However, I will be back every weekend to continue running the club. Unfortunately, I won't be able to run weekday classes until the race is over. There will be a couple weekend where I won't be able to come down to Busan, but I'll have people running the club in my absence.
This is a major international race with the top male yachtsmen from around the world. Many crew members from America's cup will participate in the race. I will try to make arrangements for our members who want to watch or participate. It really is a great opportunity for those who want to see racing a the highest level.
This year has been beyond expectations so far. I look forward to the an incredible year.
I've created a photobucket album that we can all share. I'm getting a new waterproof camera this year so I'm planning on snapping many more photos than ever before. I'll post them in this album so you can easily download print quality photos. If you can, please contribute your own photos as well. Your see the photos on the right; just click on them and it will take your to the album.
I have made changes to the membership plan. Those who wish to skipper keel boats (Ambitious) will need to pay an additional 200,000 per year on the annual membership or 20,000 won per month on the monthly membership. I've made this change because of the costs involved in having a keel boat such at, gas, docking fees, extra taxes, and maintenance. This is effective immediately. For existing member from last year, you may continue to use Ambitious until your re-newal date without paying the addtitional 200,000.
The Busan Expat Sailing Association is having a welcome back BBQ on Saturday the 28th of March. Everyone is invited, but RSVP is requested so we can plan better. Please join us and let's get ready to do some serious sailing again!
We are having a Year End Party this Sunday the 7th . It will be held at the Sunset Lounge in Haeundae (Mipo) at 6:30pm. We will be having a surf and turf dinner with wine and beer. Each member and guests should contribute 30,000 won. This includes dinner and drinks. I'm also preparing a gift for each member so make sure you attend. RSVP as soon as you can so I can better plan the evening.
We will be racing this weekend. If you want to join, you can use our boats in the open class or you can charter a Laser from our neigbors, BYC. If you want to join, let me know.
